2014 Evergreen State Fair

This year's Evergreen State Fair went well. I thought I wouldn't have as many entries in the Food Preservation category because I hadn't done as much canning because I am serving a Family History mission for my church (LDS/Mormon) which takes a lot of time. But I was wrong...

All of my entries in the Baking Department did well:

I didn't make a new doll this year for the fair but entered my mermaid doll in a fish bowl with a story:

This is Arianna...I'm sure you've always thought it would be fun to have your own mermaid - especially a green mermaid like Arianna. But it isn't actually as fun as you might think. She doesn't seem pleased with anything we do for her. She has a lovely aquarium at home (this is her travel fish bowl) and we've filled it with seashells from the Atlantic to remind her of her home. And we even buy expensive frozen Mermaid food for her. She does sing for us but all of the songs are sad songs about lost love and faraway places. Lately she's been moping more than ever and she never even braids her hair anymore...

This year's theme was Animal Magnetism so I added some large farm animals that I ordered from Amazon.com to my dragon doll.

I took an online class through Doll Street Dreamers taught by Dawn M Schiller. This Pocket Fae is my first attempt to sculpt anything.

We entered photos, scarecrows, produce, and more:

Misty Dawn - doll for Flat Stanley Round Robin

I'm still playing catch-up on this blog. Two weeks ago I sent my flat doll Misty Dawn to Arizona to begin a year long journey. I am doing this with other members of Doll Street Dreamers, an online doll club. Each month she will be sent on to a different doll-maker who will add to the doll and journal her experience at that place. I'm looking forward to getting her back next year after her adventure.

Evergreen State Fair in Monroe WA

I'm late posting this but our dolls did well at the fair this year. Both Josie and Chiana got blue ribbons and Josie also got a "Best of Class" ribbon.

My Oz doll, the Soldier with Green Whiskers also won a blue ribbon and best of class and my Dewinna doll which I entered in the Fair Theme contest won first prize!

Our family really gets involved at the fair. Our granddaughters, Alex and Emily showed dairy calves with the high school FFA. They both earned blue ribbons and after a week at the fair from 6:30 AM to 10 PM they were happy it was over.

Their dad even got involved showing a cow for the kids to get judged on judging.

I did well in the food preservation and baking divisions and also got a couple of awards that include my name being added to trophies that stay at the fair.

My Evergreen State Fair dolls

The past week is a blur to me. I cut out two dolls on Monday and turned them in to the fair at noon today. (I thought I had another week since the fair doesn't start until August 23rd.) I'm slow (in lots of ways) but the dolls came into being in less than a week... I didn't take pictures since I was still finishing the dolls on the way but the fair people let me come back and take a picture of the dolls in the display cases before the judging.
This is "DeWinna Takes Home the Blue". She is for a special fair theme category... 

And this is my doll for the cloth doll contest at the fair:
She is "Marshane of Mars". Marshane is greeting the Mars Rover, Curiosity.
